==Later life and death== Smithson died in [[Genoa, Italy]] on 27 June 1829.<ref name=SIAmain/><ref name=death>{{cite book|last=Rhees|first=William Jones|title=The Smithsonian Institution: Documents Relative to Its Origin and History: 1835β1899, Vol. 1, 1835β1887|year=1901|publisher=Government Printing Office|location=Washington, D.C.|pages=13|url=http://siarchives.si.edu/collections/siris_sic_672}}</ref> He was buried in a Protestant cemetery overlooking [[Sampierdarena]].<ref name=death/> In his [[Will (law)|will]] written in 1826, Smithson left his fortune to the son of his brother β that is, his nephew, Henry James Dickenson.<ref name=Inherit/> Dickenson had to change his surname to Hungerford as a condition of receiving the inheritance. In the will Smithson stated that Henry James Hungerford, or Hungerford's children, would receive his inheritance, and that if his nephew did not live, and had no children to receive the fortune, it would be donated to the United States to establish an educational institution to be called the [[Smithsonian Institution]].<ref name=bequestA/> Henry Hungerford died on 5 June 1835, unmarried and leaving behind no children, and the United States was the recipient.<ref name=bequestA/><ref name=nephewdead>{{cite book|last=Goode|first=George Brown|title=The Smithsonian Institution, 1846β1896, The History of Its First Half Century.|year=1897|publisher=De Vinne Press|location=Washington, D.C.|pages=25|url=https://siris-sihistory.si.edu/ipac20/ipac.jsp?&profile=all&source=~!sichronology&uri=full=3100001~!464~!16}}</ref> In his will, Smithson explained the Smithsonian mission: <blockquote>I then bequeath the whole of my property, . . . to the United States of America, to found at Washington, under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an Establishment for the increase & diffusion of knowledge among men.<ref name=bequestA>{{cite book|last=Goode|first=George Brown|title=The Smithsonian Institution, 1846β1896, The History of Its First Half Century|year=1897|publisher=De Vinne Press|location=Washington, D.C.|pages=19β21|url=http://siarchives.si.edu/collections/siris_sic_638}}</ref></blockquote>
