These chains are thought to form from [[Hotspot (geology)|volcanic hotspots]], areas of the [[lithosphere]] where the [[Mantle (geology)|mantle]] is hotter than the surrounding area.<ref name=":1">{{Cite journal |last=Wilson |first=J. These islands erode and grow as the wind and waves shift.
