Ip died on 2 December 1972, in his unit at 149 [[Tung Choi Street]] in Hong Kong,<ref name="death place" /> from [[laryngeal cancer]], only seven months before the death of [[Bruce Lee]], his most famous student.<ref>''Complete Wing Chun: The Definitive Guide to Wing Chun's History and Traditions'', Robert Chu, Rene Ritchie, Y.
