The [[Wabash River|Wabash]] and [[Ohio River|Ohio]] rivers join in the northeastern part of the county. The Saline River is a major drainage in the county, and it feeds into the Ohio River.

In recent years, average temperatures in the county seat of Shawneetown have ranged from a low of {{convert|21|°F}} in January to a high of {{convert|87|°F}} in July, although a record low of {{convert|-22|°F}} was recorded in January 1994 and a record high of {{convert|104|°F}} was recorded in August 2007.  Average monthly precipitation ranged from {{convert|3.22|in}} in October to {{convert|5.02|in}} in May.<ref name="weather" />
