There were 6,707 housing units at an average density of {{convert|1,693.7|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}} of which 348 were vacant. The population makeup of one race was 56.54% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 21.99% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.59% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 5.00% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.12% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 6.97% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 8.77% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 12.08% of the population.

There were 6,522 households, of which 29.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.74% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 30.17% had a female householder with no spouse present, 14.32% had a male householder with no spouse present, and 33.01% were non-families. 26.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.20.

25.32% of the population were under the age of 18, 3.7% from 15 to 19, 5.5% from 20 to 24, 32.5% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35.1 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
