''NZM'' had a very small circulation, estimated at 1500–2000 readers.<ref>Fischer, 2000, p. 30</ref> Despite Wagner's hoping to create a sensation and open public debate, the response was muted. A single letter of complaint was sent to [[Franz Brendel]], the editor of ''NZM'', from Mendelssohn's old colleague [[Ignaz Moscheles]].
