As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 488 people, 204 households, and 136 families residing in the city.  The population density was {{convert|561.5|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 223 housing units at an average density of {{convert|256.6|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the city was 90.78% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 8.81% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], and 0.41% from two or more races.

There were 204 households, out of which 27.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.4% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 8.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 28.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.0% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 84.8 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $34,500, and the median income for a family was $46,042. Males had a median income of $26,313 versus $24,844 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the city was $14,936.  About 11.3% of families and 16.9% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 26.2% of those under age 18 and 16.4% of those age 65 or over.
