''Chondrus crispus'' is found growing on rock from the middle intertidal [[Littoral zone|zone]] into the subtidal zone,<ref>Morton, O. 1994.  ''Marine Algae of Northern Ireland.'' Ulster Museum {{ISBN|0 900761 28 8}}</ref> all the way to the ocean floor.  It is able to survive with minimal sunlight.
