''Labourd'' and ''Bayonne'' were synonymous and used interchangeably until the 12th century before being differentiated: Labord for the province and Bayonne for the city.<ref name="Orpustan" /> The attribution of Bayonne as ''Civitas Boatium'', a place mentioned in the [[Antonine Itinerary]] and by Paul Raymond in his 1863 dictionary, has been abandoned.
