In 1971, the University of South Carolina left the ACC to become an [[NCAA Division I FBS independent schools|independent]], later joining the [[Metro Conference]] in 1983 and moving to its current home, the [[Southeastern Conference]], in 1991. On July 1, 2014, the University of Maryland departed for the [[Big Ten Conference]].
