* May 8 and July 1 – 1998 saw the release of two dueling science-fiction disaster films about asteroids: ''[[Armageddon (1998 film)|Armageddon]]'' and [[Deep Impact (film)|''Deep Impact'']], both of which became box office successes. ''Armageddon'' became the more popular of the two and was also the highest-grossing film of 1998 worldwide.
