[[Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell]] became famous for designing the [[Englischer Garten]] between 1789 and 1807. Other large green spaces are the [[Olympiapark, Munich|Olympiapark]], the [[Westpark (Munich)|Westpark]] and the [[Ostpark (Munich)|Ostpark]]. The city's oldest park is the [[Hofgarten (Munich)|Hofgarten]], near the Residenz, dating back to the 16th century. The site of the largest beer garden in town, the former royal Hirschgarten, was founded in 1780.{{citation needed|date=March 2023}}
