Modern [[Microsoft Windows|Windows]] desktop systems can use [[Speech Application Programming Interface#SAPI 1-4 API family|SAPI 4]] and [[Speech Application Programming Interface#SAPI 5 API family|SAPI 5]] components to support speech synthesis and [[speech recognition]]. SAPI 4.0 was available as an optional add-on for [[Windows 95]] and [[Windows 98]]. [[Windows 2000]] added [[Microsoft Narrator|Narrator]], a text-to-speech utility for people who have visual impairment. [[Microsoft Speech Server]] is a server-based package for voice synthesis and recognition. It is designed for network use with [[web applications]] and [[call centers]].
