The previous library building, also called Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, opened in 1935.<ref name="Harris One Book" />{{Rp|68–69}} That building is now the Branigan Cultural Center.<ref name="Harris One Book" />{{Rp|8}} and is on the [[National Register of Historic Places]].

The two university libraries at the New Mexico State University campus, Branson Library and Zuhl Library, are open to the public.
