'''The Team of the Century''' was nominated in 1984 by ''[[Sunday Independent (Ireland)|Sunday Independent]]'' readers and selected by a panel of experts including journalists and former players.<ref>{{Cite book |last=Corry |first=Eoghan |title=The GAA Book of Lists |publisher=Hodder Headline Ireland |year=2005 |page=238}}</ref> It was not chosen as part of the [[Gaelic Athletic Association]]'s centenary year celebrations. The goal was to single out the best 15 players who had played the game in their respective positions. Naturally, many of the selections were hotly debated by fans around the country.
