Nancy Katharine Sandars, FSA, FBA (1914–2015), a British archaeologist and prehistorian, published a popular translation of ''The Epic of Gilgamesh'' in 1960.<ref>''The Epic of Gilgamesh'' Translated with an Introduction by N.K. Sandars. Harmondsworth, Penguin Books, 1960, revised edition 1964. ISBN 0-14-044100-X</ref> An independent scholar, [[Nancy Sandars]] was never a university academic.

The definitive modern translation into English is a two-volume critical work by [[Andrew R. George|Andrew George]], published by [[Oxford University Press]] in 2003.
