Relations varied from cool to extremely strained between West Pakistan and the Soviet Union. This was during the [[Cold War]], and Pakistan's close ties with the United States came at the expense of relations with the Soviets.

Soviet-Pakistan relations were further eroded during the [[1960 U-2 incident]], when the Soviets shot down a US spyplane; [[Army Chief of Staff (Pakistan)|Army Chief-of-Staff]] [[Ayub Khan (Field Marshal)|Ayub Khan]] had given the US permission to fly out of [[Peshawar Air Station]] on reconnaissance and covert surveillance missions over the Soviet Union.

The USSR backed India during the [[Indo-Pakistani War of 1971]].
