Driving licensing has been harmonized throughout the [[European Union]] and the [[European Economic Area|EEA]] (and practically all European non-member states), so that common rules apply within Europe (see [[European driving licence]]). As an overview, to drive a vehicle weighing more than {{cvt|7.5|t}} for commercial purposes requires a specialist license (the type varies depending on the use of the vehicle and number of seats). For licenses first acquired after 1997, that weight was reduced to {{cvt|3.5|t}}, not including trailers.{{citation needed|date=August 2015}}

Since 2013, the C1 license category allows driving vehicles over 3.5 and up to 7.5 tonnes. The C license category allows driving vehicles over 3.5 tonnes with a trailer up to 750&nbsp;kg, and the CE category allows driving category C vehicles with a trailer over 750&nbsp;kg.
