When the ball leaves the side of the field, a [[line-out (rugby union)|line-out]] is awarded against the team which last touched the ball.<ref name="irblaws19">{{cite web |url=http://www.irblaws.com/index.php?law=19 |title=Law 19 Touch and Lineout |publisher=[[International Rugby Board|IRB]] |access-date=27 February 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140209104345/http://www.irblaws.com/index.php?law=19 |archive-date=9 February 2014 |url-status=dead}}</ref> Forward players from each team line up a metre apart, perpendicular to the touchline and between {{cvt|5|and|15|m|yd}} from the touchline.<ref name="irblaws19"/> The ball is thrown from the touchline down the centre of the lines of forwards by a player (usually the [[hooker (rugby union)|hooker]]) from the team that did not play the ball into touch.<ref name="irblaws19"/> The exception to this is when the ball went out from a penalty, in which case the side who gained the penalty throws the ball in.<ref name="irblaws19"/>
