It began as intense intra-city rivalry between the Bears and the [[History of the Chicago Cardinals|Chicago Cardinals]], which the Bears were leading 47–19–6 through 1959, when the Cardinals [[History of the St. Louis Cardinals (NFL)|moved to St. Louis]]. The rivalry's importance waned further after the Cardinals moved to the [[Phoenix metropolitan area]] in 1988.
