Since the [[War of 1812]], Asian Americans have [[United States armed forces|served]] and [[Military history of the United States|fought]] on behalf of the United States. Serving in both segregated and non-segregated units until the [[Executive Order 9981|desegregation of the US Military in 1948]], [[List of Asian American Medal of Honor recipients|31]] have been awarded the nation's highest award for combat valor, the [[Medal of Honor]].
