Enrolling approximately 40,000 students<ref>{{cite web|url=http://oira.ua.edu/factbook/reports/student-enrollment/fall-term/annual-enrollment-by-level-and-year/|title=Annual Enrollment by Level and Year|website=oira.ua.edu}}</ref> on a {{convert|1,970|acre|km2}} campus, UA has been a part of Tuscaloosa's identity since it opened its doors in 1831. [[Stillman College]], which opened in 1875, is a [[Historically Black colleges and universities|historically black]] liberal arts college enrolling approximately 1,200 students on a {{convert|105|acre|km2}} campus. Additionally, [[Shelton State Community College]], one of the largest community colleges in Alabama, is located in the city. The school enrolls around 4,000 students from all backgrounds and income levels.
