It is also the home of several local offices of the Italian central administration. It is the seat of the Superintendency of Cultural and Environmental Heritage,<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.sbappsaecaor.beniculturali.it/ |title=Home - Soprintendenza per i Beni Architettonici, Paesaggistici, Storici, Artistici ed Etnoantropologici per le province di Cagliari e Oristano |publisher=Sbappsaecaor.beniculturali.it |access-date=3 May 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150421233516/http://www.sbappsaecaor.beniculturali.it/ |archive-date=21 April 2015 |url-status=dead }}</ref> of the Sardinia Archival Superintendency<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.sa-sardegna.beniculturali.it/ |title=La Soprintendenza archivistica - Soprintendenza Archivistica per la Sardegna |publisher=Sa-sardegna.beniculturali.it |access-date=3 May 2015 |archive-date=4 February 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150204095914/http://www.sa-sardegna.beniculturali.it/ |url-status=dead }}</ref> and of the Archeological Superintendency<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.archeocaor.beniculturali.it/ |title=Home - Soprintendenza Archeologia della Sardegna |publisher=Archeocaor.beniculturali.it |access-date=3 May 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150317083905/http://www.archeocaor.beniculturali.it/ |archive-date=17 March 2015 |url-status=dead }}</ref> of the Cultural Heritage Ministry,<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.beniculturali.it/mibac/export/MiBAC/index.html/ |title=Home-Page Sito web del Ministero dei beni e delle attività culturali e del turismo |publisher=Beniculturali.it |access-date=3 May 2015 |archive-date=4 May 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150504194423/http://www.beniculturali.it/mibac/export/MiBAC/index.html |url-status=dead }}</ref> of the Sardinia and Provincial seat of the Employment and Social Policies Ministry, of the regional offices of the Finance and Economy Ministry,<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.rgs.mef.gov.it/VERSIONE-I/La-Ragione/Organigram/Ragionerie2/Sardegna/Cagliari/ |title=Ragioneria Generale dello Stato - Ministero dell'Economia e delle Finanze |publisher=Rgs.mef.gov.it |access-date=3 May 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150402133152/http://www.rgs.mef.gov.it/VERSIONE-I/La-Ragione/Organigram/Ragionerie2/Sardegna/Cagliari/ |archive-date=2 April 2015 |url-status=dead }}</ref> and of some branch offices of the Health Ministry. Cagliari is home to all criminal, civil, administrative and accounting courts for Sardinia of the Ministry of Justice up to the High Court of Assizes of Appeal. It was home to a prison, Buon Cammino, built in the late 19th century, famous because no one has ever managed to escape. A new modern prison has been built in the nearby town of Uta. Traditionally, votes in Cagliari are oriented towards the center-right wing. Since World War II, all the mayors belonged to the [[Democrazia Cristiana|Christian Democracy]] party with the exception of Salvatore Ferrara, from the Socialist Party, allied with the former. After the collapse of the traditional parties in the 1990s, the mayors belonged to the party or the coalition led by [[Silvio Berlusconi]]. The current economic and political crisis that affects Italy has prompted the electorate toward a large abstention and to elect a young mayor, Massimo Zedda, who belongs to a centre-left alliance. In the last municipal elections in June 2016, Massimo Zedda was confirmed in the first round with 50.86% of the votes.
