The trail passes through the towns of [[Dalton, Massachusetts|Dalton]] and [[Cheshire, Massachusetts|Cheshire]], and summits the highest point in the state at {{convert|3491|ft|m}}, [[Mount Greylock]]. It then quickly descends to the valley within {{convert|2|mi|km}} of [[North Adams, Massachusetts|North Adams]] and [[Williamstown, Massachusetts|Williamstown]], before ascending again to the Vermont state line. The trail throughout Massachusetts is maintained by the Berkshire Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club.
