[[Roman gardens]] were influenced by Egyptian, [[Persian gardens|Persian]], and [[Greek gardens|Greek]] gardening techniques.{{Citation needed|date=June 2018}} In Ancient [[Latium]], a garden was part of every farm. According to [[Cato the Elder]], every garden should be close to the house and should have flower beds and ornamental trees.{{sfn|Semple|1929|p=435}} [[Horace]] wrote that during his time [[flower garden]]s became a national indulgence.{{sfn|Semple|1929|p=436}}

Gardens were not reserved for the extremely wealthy. Excavations in [[Pompeii]] show that gardens attaching to residences were scaled down to meet the space constraints of the home of the average Roman. Modified versions of Roman garden designs were adopted in Roman settlements in [[Africa (Roman province)|Africa]], [[Roman Gaul|Gaul]], and [[Roman Britain|Britannia]]. As town houses were replaced by tall ''[[Insula (building)|insulae]]'' (apartment buildings), these urban gardens were replaced by [[Flower box|window boxes]] or [[roof garden]]s.{{citation needed|date=September 2014}}
