Waterloo was part of [[Waterloo County, Ontario|Waterloo County]] until 1973 when a restructuring created the [[Waterloo Regional Municipality, Ontario|Regional Municipality of Waterloo]], which consists of the cities of Waterloo, [[Kitchener, Ontario|Kitchener]], and [[Cambridge, Ontario|Cambridge]], and the townships of [[Woolwich, Ontario|Woolwich]], [[Wilmot, Ontario|Wilmot]], [[Wellesley, Ontario (community)|Wellesley]], and [[North Dumfries, Ontario|North Dumfries]]. [[Waterloo City Council]] consists of a mayor and seven councillors, each representing a [[Ward (politics)|ward]]. The number of wards was increased from five to seven in the November 2006 elections. As of 2022, the [[List of mayors of Waterloo, Ontario|mayor of Waterloo]] is Dorothy McCabe, elected in October 2022.
