Due to the topographical nature of the city, Sheffield was not served by its own airport. In May 1990, [[Sheffield Development Corporation]] entered into an agreement with A. F. Budge (Mining) Ltd for the construction and operation of the airport and the development of adjacent land. In 1997, [[Sheffield City Airport]] was opened on land close to the M1 and the Sheffield Parkway.
