==== Gardening and Bourbon roses ====
The first members of the [[Bourbon rose|"Bourbon" group]] of garden roses originated on this island (then still Isle Bourbon, hence the name) from a spontaneous [[Hybridisation (biology)|hybridisation]] between [[Damask rose]]s and ''[[Rosa chinensis]]'',<ref>{{Cite journal |last1=ADUMITRESEI |first1=LIDIA |last2=STĂNESCU |first2=IRINA |year=2009 |title=Theoretical Considerations upon the origin and nomenclature of the present rose cultivars |journal=Journal of Plant Development |volume=16}}</ref> which had been brought there by the colonists.
