Portugal's main police organisations are the ''[[Guarda Nacional Republicana]]&nbsp;– GNR'' ([[National Republican Guard (Portugal)|National Republican Guard]]), a [[gendarmerie]]; the ''[[Polícia de Segurança Pública]]&nbsp;– PSP'' (Public Security Police), a civilian police force who work in urban areas; and the ''[[Polícia Judiciária]]&nbsp;– PJ'' (Judicial Police), a highly specialised criminal investigation police that is overseen by the Public Ministry.

Portugal has 49 correctional facilities in total run by the Ministry of Justice.
