The two subfamilies of mosquitoes are [[Anophelinae]], containing three genera and approximately 430 species, and [[Culicinae]], which contains 11 tribes, 108 genera and 3,046 species. Kyanne Reidenbach and colleagues analysed mosquito [[phylogenetics]] in 2009, using both nuclear DNA and morphology of 26 species.
