=== Continental/German style === {{Main|Continental knitting}} Continental knitting is achieved by holding the yarn in the left hand for both knitting and purling. Patterns are created on the outside (public-facing) side of the piece. ==== Norwegian style ==== {{Main|Norwegian knitting}} While knit stitches are worked as in the classic Continental style, the purl is worked by leaving the yarn at back and moving the needle.<ref>{{Cite web|date=2018-04-17|title=The 5 Knitting Styles (And How to Knit Them)|url=https://www.allfreeknitting.com/Knitting-Tutorials/Knitting-Styles|access-date=2021-09-23|website=AllFreeKnitting.com|language=en|archive-date=1 October 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20211001162907/https://www.allfreeknitting.com/Knitting-Tutorials/Knitting-Styles|url-status=live}}</ref> ==== Russian style ==== Another variation on Continental knitting, this style is achieved by "picking" up the yarn by moving the needle head into it. Then, the yarn is wrapped around the index finger on the left hand so it is coming over the top of the finger, back around underneath, and then on top of the middle finger. The knitter will wind up with their index finger very close to the back of the left-hand needle. In Russian knitting, it is common to slip the first stitch of every row.
