In Ismailism, things have an exterior meaning, what is apparent. This is called ''zāhir.''{{cn|date=May 2022}}

A fundamental aspect of Ismailism is the co-existence of the physical and the spiritual, the ''[[Zahir (Islam)|zahir]]'' (exoteric) form and the ''[[Batin (Islam)|batin]]'' (esoteric) essence. The esoteric is the source of the exoteric, and the exoteric is the manifestation of the esoteric.
