Furman began as Furman Academy and Theological Institution in 1825 named after [[Richard Furman]]. The University Center of Greenville, located in the former shopping mall [[McAlister Square]], offers over 70 undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs from 9 South Carolina universities.
