On opening it catered for around 60 children, but numbers had grown to around 100 by 1850.<ref name=Stuttard_1995_pp179-181>{{harvnb|Stuttard|1995|pp=179β181}}</ref> St Giles' Infant School was established in 1852 by Mary Howard to replace the Park Lane school. Originally boys and girls were taught separately, but the two halves were amalgamated in 1900. By 1904 there were 317 children enrolled.<ref name=Stuttard_1995_pp179-181/> Barnett Wood Infant School was opened as Ashtead Council School in 1906.
