In the late 19th century, what is now the Ashland Police Department was organized when the town was still known as Poage's Landing.<ref name="PD_HIS"/> The first executive officer was a town [[marshal]], who was soon replaced by a professional police department.

The city of Ashland currently has 49 sworn officers, three civilian employees who function as administrative support and six parapolice who handle tasks that do not require the services of a sworn officer.<ref name="PD_HIS"/>
