Many royal funerals took place at the abbey between that of Edward the Confessor in 1066{{sfn|Wilkinson|Knighton|2010|p=7}} and that of Prince Henry, the last royal buried in the church, in 1790. On 6 September 1997, the ceremonial [[funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales]] was held at the abbey. Before the funeral, the railings of the abbey were swamped with flowers and tributes.
