A number of murderers have performed seemingly vampiric rituals upon their victims. [[Serial killer]]s [[Peter Kürten]] and [[Richard Trenton Chase]] were both called "vampires" in the [[tabloid journalism|tabloids]] after they were discovered drinking the blood of the people they murdered. In 1932, an unsolved murder case in [[Stockholm]], Sweden, was nicknamed the "[[Atlas Vampire|Vampire murder]]", because of the circumstances of the victim's death.<ref name=Stig1>{{cite book|last=Linnell|first=Stig|title=Stockholms spökhus och andra ruskiga ställen|orig-year=1968|year=1993|publisher=Raben Prisma|isbn=978-91-518-2738-4|language=sv}}</ref> The late-16th-century Hungarian countess and mass murderer [[Elizabeth Báthory]] became infamous in later centuries' works, which depicted her bathing in her victims' blood to retain beauty or youth.{{sfn|Hoyt|1984|pp=68–71}}
