France was one of the [[European Great Powers]] with populous foreign empires. Like the others{{snd}}the United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and formerly Germany and the Ottoman Empire{{snd}}its populous states abroad have all seceded, in most cases been granted independence. These secessionist movements generally took place at similar stages by continent.
