Before the reform of the [[Postal codes in Spain|postal code]] system implemented in Spain, Melilla used the code ''29801'', corresponding to the province of [[Málaga]], with which it maintained an administrative affiliation. This situation changed with the entry into force of the ''Order of 27 September 1995'', which established a new postal code system to better reflect the territorial particularities of certain areas. As a result of this order, from ''1 February 1996'', Melilla began using the prefix ''52'', with ''52001'' assigned as its main postal code.
