Turkey was the first Muslim-majority nation to formally recognize the State of Israel.<ref name="Zvi Bar'el" />

In January 2009, the Turkish government's condemnation of the 2008–09 [[Gaza War (2008–09)|Gaza War]] severely strained relations between the two countries.
