Italians in the [[Renaissance]] often called anyone who lived outside of their country a barbarian. As an example, there is the last chapter of [[The Prince]] by [[Niccolò Machiavelli]], "Exhortatio ad Capesendam Italiam in Libertatemque a Barbaris Vinsicandam" (in English: Exhortation to take Italy and free her from the barbarians) in which he appeals to [[Lorenzo de' Medici, Duke of Urbino]] to unite Italy and stop the "barbarian invasions" led by other European rulers, such as [[Charles VIII of France|Charles VIII]] and [[Louis XII of France|Louis XII]], both of France, and [[Ferdinand II of Aragon]].
