===South Africa=== {{Main|Firearm regulation in South Africa}} To apply for a firearm license in South Africa applicants must pass a competency test covering the specific type of firearm that is being applied for, and a test on the South African firearm laws. Once these tests are passed one needs to apply for a competency certificate, where the South African Police Service performs a background check and an inspection of the premises where the firearm will be stored. After both tests are passed and the respective certificates are awarded, one can then apply for a firearm license in categories ranging from self-defence to [[Professional hunter|professional hunting]]. Different license categories have different restrictions, for example the amount of ammunition owners may hold. Using guns to hunt is permitted<ref>{{Cite web | url=https://www.saps.gov.za/services/flash/firearms/faq_categories.php | title=About Us | SAPS (South African Police Service) | access-date=15 August 2018 | archive-date=30 October 2020 | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201030124946/https://www.saps.gov.za/services/flash/firearms/faq_categories.php | url-status=live }}</ref>
