Kamacite primarily forms on meteorites but has been found on extraterrestrial bodies such as Mars. This was discovered by The Mars Exploration Rover (MER) ''[[Opportunity (rover)|Opportunity]]''. The kamacite did not originate on Mars but was put there by a meteorite. This was particularly of interest because the meteorite fell under the lesser known class of [[mesosiderite]]s. Mesosiderites are very rare on Earth and its occurrence on Mars gives clues to the origin of its larger source rock.<ref>{{Cite journal |last1=Schröder |first1=C. |last2=Ashley |first2=J.
