== Recognition ==
[[Josep Almudéver Mateu|Josep Almudéver]], believed to be the last surviving veteran of the International Brigades, died on 23 May 2021 at the age of 101. Although born into a Spanish family and living in Spain at the outbreak of the conflict, he also held French citizenship and enlisted in the International Brigades to avoid age restrictions in the Spanish Republican army. On 26 January 1996, the [[Spanish government]] gave Spanish citizenship to the 600 or so remaining Brigadistas, fulfilling a promise made by Prime Minister [[Juan Negrín]] in 1938.

In 1996, [[Jacques Chirac]], then [[French President]], granted the former French members of the International Brigades the legal status of former service personnel ("ancient combatants") following the request of two French communist [[Members of Parliament]], Lefort and Asensi, both children of volunteers. Before 1996, the same request was turned down several times including by [[François Mitterrand]], the former Socialist President.
