Throughout the Ortega government, starting in 2006, but escalating with the [[2018–2020 Nicaraguan protests]], [[Sandinista National Liberation Front]] government has employed death squads also known as "''Turbas''" or militia groups armed and aided by the [[National Police of Nicaragua|National Police]] to attack pro-democracy protesters.
