The United Kingdom has no statute of limitations for criminal offences beyond minor [[summary offences]] (offences tried exclusively in the [[Magistrates' court (England and Wales)|magistrates' court]]s);<ref name=els/> the [[Magistrates' Courts Act 1980]] requires that criminal proceedings for summary offences be brought within six months. For civil claims, the period of validity varies depending on the type of claim. For example, a claim (debt) from a simple contract can no longer be pursued after six years.
