===New Year culmination===
The midnight [[culmination]] of Sirius in the northern hemisphere coincides with the beginning of the New Year<ref name="EarthSky2017">{{cite web |title=Sirius midnight culmination New Years Eve | date= 31 December 2017| url=https://earthsky.org/tonight/brightest-stars-midnight-culmination-new-years-eve | access-date=5 January 2022}}</ref> of the [[Gregorian calendar]] during the decades around the year 2000. Over the years, its midnight culmination moves slowly, owing to the combination of the star's [[proper motion]] and the [[precession of the equinoxes]]. At the time of the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in the year 1582, its culmination occurred 17 minutes before midnight into the new year under the assumption of a constant motion.
