Although he anticipated full recovery, the fractured femur never healed, and restricted his physical activity. His health gradually deteriorated and he died of heart failure after eight months, on 5 September 1902, in Berlin, a month before his 81st birthday. <ref name=weisenberg/><ref>{{cite news |title=Prof. Virchow is Dead.
