In Italy, the mayor is called {{Lang|it|sindaco}}, or informally {{Lang|it|primo cittadino}} ('first citizen'). Every municipality ({{langx|it|comune}}) has a mayor who represents the local government. The mayor is a member of the City council, the legislative body which checks the mayor's policy guidelines and is able to enforce his resignation by a [[motion of no confidence]], and is entitled to appoint and release the members of the executive body ({{langx|it|giunta}}).
