Inner Mongolia under the People's Republic of China has historically allowed the Mongolian language as a [[medium of instruction]]. It was reported by ''[[The New York Times]]'' on 31 August 2020 that in the summer 2020, the Chinese government announced a new education policy, which called for Chinese to gradually replace Mongolian as the language of instruction in three subjects, including language and literature, politics, and history, in elementary and middle schools around the Inner Mongolia region.
